Meditate Your Way To Stress Reduction

It's easy to let stress take over your life. From study to work to family to health to money - and to everything in between - most people feel like there simply isn't enough time in a day to get everything done! And who can blame them?

Stress is bad enough in and of itself, but stress can also cause real physical and emotional harm if it is allowed to grow unchecked. So what can be done to make sure stress does not take hold of us?

Meditation has been used for hundreds of years as a weapon against stress. Yes, it can seem off-putting, awkward, or even as though it's something only odd-balls do, but meditation actually has roots in every single civilization during some point or another - which proves that there is absolutely something to its practice. The simple instructions below will help you explore meditation for yourself. Don't be afraid to give it a try - what do you have to lose (other than your stress?)

Begin each relaxation time by reducing distractions, noise, and interruptions. Give yourself the time and privacy you need. Find a comfortable sitting position, wear loose and comfortable clothing. Relax and take several deep breathes. Close your eyes and try to mentally focus on one peaceful word, thought, or image.

If there is a picture, a memory, a vision of the future or a thought that tends to calm you down, try to picture that in your mind. For some people it's the sound of the ocean, for others its waterfalls, and for yet others, the memory of staring off a mountain peak (but it really could be anything at all). Clear your head, let your muscles loosen up and stop worrying about what is going on around you. Relax and enjoy the peace that your image, picture, memory or vision of the future brings to you.

Focus on this image as long as you can. When you feel yourself drifting away from the image, don't force it to stay. This is a good time to stop. Stretch and exhale deeply as you come back to reality. Congratulations, you have just completed the most simple and basic form of meditation! Pretty easy wasn't it?

This method works well in reducing stress because it re-focuses your mind. It is also the basis for several other exercises and meditations that will make you even more relaxed. So by practicing this simple technique you are allowing yourself to develop the ability to create a meditative state and eventually take meditation to another level if you'd like to.

You will always want to start any stress reduction exercise with this basic meditative and relaxed state. You may also wish to concentrate on whatever phrases help you relax. Saying "nice and easy" or "all is well" are good generic examples of phrases that help to relax us and calm the mind.

You can try any phrase or image that feels good for you, and it will become easy to return to it anytime you are feeling stressed out. Utilizing this meditative technique will not only reduce stress, but also it will improve your health, and aid your productivity. Unlike medications, the only side effect that comes with its use is a better quality of life!
